Global Research Findings

What are we learning about nursing’s brand image around the world?

Research across countries is revealing both important differences and striking similarities in how nursing is understood. While cultural context matters, several patterns are beginning to emerge.

The Global Pattern

Four major findings from cross-national research.

01
Care & Compassion

A Consistently Recognized Strength

Across countries, caring, compassion, trust, and patient-centeredness remain among the strongest and most consistently recognized attributes associated with nursing.

These findings demonstrate that nursing’s deeply valued caring image is not disappearing.

Caring remains a foundational strength of the profession’s global brand image.

02
Competence & Expertise

Another Core Global Strength

Nursing is also consistently associated with competence and skill.

The world recognizes that nurses are highly competent.

03
The Leadership Gap

What is less visible.

The research also reveals a consistent gap.

Nurses lead through clinical judgment, scientific expertise, decision-making, research, education, innovation, policy, and practice.

Yet leadership, influence, authority, autonomy, and decision-making are less consistently visible within the public image of nursing.

The opportunity is not to replace nursing’s caring image.

It is to expand that image.

Nursing can be recognized for its care and compassion while also being more fully understood as a profession defined by expertise, authority, influence, and leadership.
